3 Beautiful Freshwater Tropical Fish For Your Aquarium

Posted on: 10 December 2021

Certain freshwater fish have adapted swimmingly to aquarium life. The good news is, many of those that can live happily in a tank are also among the most pleasing to the eye. Below is an introduction to three beautiful varieties of freshwater tropical fish for your aquarium.

1. Tetras

Tetras are a very popular freshwater tropical fish and are known for their beautiful coloring. Tetra fish love having plenty of light available to them and prefer tanks with live plants. If you decorate your aquarium with a dark background, tetras will act as natural highlights of color that move around the tank.

Most species of tetras are of average to smaller size with mild temperaments, but there are a few exceptions. Buenos Aires tetras can grow quite large and may intimidate your other small freshwater fish. Serpa tetras have striking reddish-brown colorations with black highlights, but they can sometimes be aggressive toward other species of fish.

2. Guppies

Guppies are one of the most common freshwater tropical fish thanks to their hardy nature and easy care requirements. Guppies are peaceful, and both males and females may feature attractive splashes of color and banded fins. They get along well with other types of fish such as tetras. Guppies are social fish that sometimes swim in schools made up of dozens of fish, but they do not tend to form schools in aquariums where there are often no environmental stressors.

Guppies are very easy to care for because they don't need much space or special equipment. Just clean your tank regularly, keep the temperature in the 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range that is comfortable for tropical fish, and feed your guppies a high-quality flake food for tropical fish once or twice per day.

3. Swordtails

Although they are some of the most commonly kept fish in freshwater aquariums, swordtail fish are not as well known or as popular as other types of freshwater fish. Swordtail fish come in an array of colors, and they often have a two-tone pattern on their bodies. Colors range from olive green and yellow to bright reds and pinks. Swordtail fish like to have places to hide in the tank to feel safe from other, larger fish.

These are a few popular varieties of freshwater tropical fish that everyone should know. However, this guide has only scratched the surface; there are thousands of fascinating freshwater tropical fish for home aquariums that are waiting for you to discover them.
